April 1, 2022"Reliable access to fast and affordable Internet has been an issue in this country for years, but 2020 and its unique circumstances highlighted how important the internet truly is to everything we do — from work to school, education, entertainment, and even healthcare," said Rebecca Lee Armstrong, Internet Expert at HighSpeedInternet.com.
Armstrong continued, "This year also showed us how different parts of the US currently experience the Internet differently. It’s been eye-opening, but the bright side is that many companies are rushing to fill the Internet gap with new technologies that we hope will make Internet accessibility better and more equal in the future."
Here are some of the key findings:
• The city with the fastest Internet speed (according to speed test data) in 2020 was Whitestone, NY, with a speed of 138.4 Mbps, and the city with the slowest Internet speed was Stowe, VT, with a speed of 7.3 Mbps. The average speed for the whole country was 42.86 Mbps.
• 45% of Internet users surveyed think their internet connection is too slow. But only 16% upgraded.
• Wyoming pays the most for Internet, with a rate of $7.84 per Mbps. Rhode Island pays the least for Internet, with a rate of $0.63 per Mbps. We found that the average price of Internet in the US is $3.91 per Mbps.
• Technological advancements in wireless Internet like 5G, LEO satellite (low-earth orbit) and 4G home internet are helping more people stay connected without the need to bury cables.
• In a recent survey on popular tech myths in 2020, we found 1 out of 4 think 5G towers make you sick, and a third of respondents believe low-Earth orbit satellites will ruin our view of the night sky.
