Keysight and UC Berkeley Advance OTA Testing for Next-Generation 6G Wireless Systems

Keysight and UC Berkeley are exploring new over-the-air (OTA) measurement techniques designed to make testing advanced 6G devices and wireless systems faster and more flexible.

Key Highlights

  • Keysight and UC Berkeley are collaborating on new over-the-air testing approaches to improve the measurement and characterization of next-generation 6G wireless devices and systems.

  • The research targets increasingly complex antenna and beamforming architectures, with a focus on making radiated-performance measurements faster, more flexible, and less time-consuming.

  • The work could have broader applications beyond 6G, including emerging FR3 wireless systems, advanced radar, and non-terrestrial networks.

Keysight Technologies, Inc. is collaborating with the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC) at the University of California, Berkeley, on research aimed at improving over-the-air (OTA) testing for next-generation wireless devices and systems.

Led by UC Berkeley Assistant Professor Aditya Muppala, the research is exploring new approaches to measuring radiated performance as wireless systems become more complex. The work is particularly relevant to emerging 6G technologies, including systems operating in upper-midband spectrum, often referred to as FR3.

As wireless devices incorporate increasingly sophisticated antenna arrays and beamforming architectures, characterizing how they transmit and receive energy across three-dimensional space can become more demanding. Engineers also face similar measurement challenges in applications such as advanced radar and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs).

Muppala's research will investigate techniques intended to make OTA antenna measurements faster, more flexible, and capable of supporting multiple frequency bands. The goal is to provide engineers with additional options for characterizing advanced wireless systems while reducing the time and complexity associated with current measurement approaches.

“I'm excited to have Keysight behind this research as we explore new approaches to over-the-air antenna measurement,” said Muppala. We believe these techniques have the potential to be a game changer for how OTA systems are deployed in real-world environments, making advanced measurements faster, more flexible, and more practical for emerging wireless systems.”

Giampaolo Tardioli, Vice President and General Manager at Keysight, said: “Keysight is excited to work with BWRC to advance innovative approaches to wireless testing.”

The research comes as the wireless industry investigates technologies and spectrum options that could support future 6G networks. More flexible OTA measurement techniques could become increasingly important as researchers and manufacturers evaluate systems with larger numbers of antennas, advanced beamforming, and operation across multiple frequency bands.
