Fiber networks are being deployed at near record numbers. What this means for network planners, design engineers and construction managers is that a method to aid in faster deployments with fewer people is now not just a luxury, but a necessity. Fiber distribution hub (FDH) cabinets play a significant role in almost any fiber network. FDH cabinets vary in size and type, however, one thing they all have in common is the need to provide a method to terminate both the feeder (F1) and the distribution (F2) fibers in an organized and protected manner.

Two of the most common methods are providing a FDH with a pre-terminated tail of a specified length and splicing that tail in a splice case mounted on the aerial strand or in the case of a buried deployment, placed in an underground vault, or providing a method to splice the feeder and distribution cables inside the FDH itself by terminating the fibers in small enclosures or cassettes. The second method is what is known as In cassette splicing (ICS).

Michael began his career as Process Engineer, designing and manufacturing fiber optic cables for Anaconda-Ericsson. Later, he was Fiber Optic Product Manager at Belden (for fiber cable products in the Local Area Network market), Pirelli (for fiber cable products in the CATV market), Hubbell (for structured cabling systems) and Legrand (for the Ortronics network infrastructure solutions).

Before joining Clearfield, Michael was Global Product Manager at nVent’s (Hoffman and Schroff) Data Center & Networking Solutions initiative, developing and producing the direct-to-chip thermal management solutions for high-performance computing data centers. Michael holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Notre Dame and is a Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT).
